9.9.09

9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9

Totally posted on my gchat status today that being the huge math nerd that I am, I am taking great pleasure in the fact that today is 09/09/09. I couldn't explain exactly why I liked it any more than it simply looked good then my friend sent me the following:

in case you havent seen all the mathy jazz about todayThose who like to play with numbers will have a field day on 09/09/09.

The date falls on a Wednesday in September, both of which have 9 letters.

September 9 also is the 252nd day of the year. 2+5+2

In addition, if you multiply a single-digit number by 9, the resulting two digits add up to 9. Consider: 8x9

The last one is a DUH. But the rest makes it more fun.

PS. I would love to see 9 if anyone is interested...

w00t for t-shirts

This is today's shirt.woot.com t-shirt. It is about math so of course I love it.

Here's the description below. If you want one order one today! http://shirt.woot.com/

I'm still debating the purchase as I bet I could solve the problem in the background, but it is just so cute. Thankfully, the designer reminded me it was probably not a good idea to wear it to any future interviews...

Something Just Doesn’t Add Up

The protesters may have shouted her down, but Barbie was right: math is hard.

And for most of you, that question that made your math teachers so uncomfortable – “what am I ever going to need this for?” – turned out to be an apt one. All those years of schooling gave you was the false sense that you can accurately figure out a restaurant tip or a necessary quantity of cyclone fencing. Such hubris.

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if you could just pay some really smart person, like, fifty cents every time you need a complex math problem worked out? Math whizzes get jobs, waiters receive their proper tips, less cyclone fencing is wasted, and the rest of us have more mental energy to contemplate which Gossip Girl cast member is the hottest – what’s wrong with that?

Also, in Great Britain, they call it “maths”. That’s just messed up.

Wear this shirt: while you’re doodling spirals and stars in your notebook during math class.

Don’t wear this shirt: to interviews for any job involving numbers, or math, or money – in other words, just about any job except pro wrestler or Internet copywriter.

This shirt tells the world: “Hey, what’d you get for #9?”

We call this color: The Square Of The Hypotenuse Of A Right Triangle Is Equal To The Sum Of The Squares Of The Other Baby Blue Sides

DIY - Ironic T-Shirts

Given the current economic environment I decided to try and cut costs by making my own ironic t-shirts for this weekend's festivities. For just $3 for a youth L (green shirt), $6 for a fitted adult M (white) and $1.19 for a tube of black metallic puffy paint, I was able to make two wonderful t-shirts.

Both shirts were well received. Well, let's be honest, the math one provided me with some interesting responses. And now a whole new set of people were exposed to my true nerdy ways. Meh, it's good to get that out in the open so we can all accept it and move on.

I highly recommend the do-it-yourself ironic t. It doesn't take all that long, and if I can do it, basically anyone can!

The Baker Judged Me

I went to pick up a pie for Pi Day this morning. As the girl was putting my pie in the box I told her that I was happy that it was Pi day. She was a little confused and then 2 and 2 made 4 for her and she said "oh, Pi" and drew the Greek letter in the air. I said "yes". She then said, "are you in high school...college...I mean you look too old for high school but that is the last time I remember someone mentioning this day to me" I said "no, I am out of college". She said "Did you go to Harvard or MIT?" I just smiled and said "No, just a nerd...". She then asked me how many digits I could recite - this question was in a tone that I bet she normally reserves for small children. I told her not many, all I only know is 3.14159265. I mean, I had to answer the question. With that, I took my pie and left.

Yeah. That was awkward.

Happy Pi Day

Square Root Day was just a few days ago.

But today is Pi Day :)

I have been celebrating this holiday for years now. It always brings me back to my roots of a math nerd.

If things go as planned this will post at 3/14 1:59 if i could specify the seconds at 26 i would.

Apple doesn't Fall Far....

Last night I was talking to my mom because I tried twice on Tuesday to call her and wish her a happy square root day. When I was talking to her on Wednesday I asked if she listened to my voicemail. She said no. As you can see an aversion to voice mail is genetic, my uncle doesn't listen to it either. I explained I had been trying to tell her about the math holiday, as it only happens nine times a century. She then asked why I didn't attempt to call my father - I figured he was asleep (I called at 9:30 pm), and why I didn't call her back on 2/2/04 - I didn't know about square root day at that time. We continued with the conversation where I promised to call her on 4/4/16 and we deduced with relative certainty she would also be around for 5/5/25 as that is less than 20 years from now and I would be sure to call then, too.

My family is nerdy. Between the four of us, two graduated from undergrad with math degrees and the other two with natural science of some sort.

Happy Square Root Day

Hey, I wouldn't be true to myself if I didn't wish you all a Happy Square Root Day

You understand today is 03/03/09. Square root of 9 is 3...stay with me folks :)

This only happens NINE TIMES a CENTURY!!!!!

Don't even think for a second that I have forgotten about my favorite math holiday...Pi Day (3/14) which is right around the corner :)

4 x 12 is not 52

"the pill" is probably one of the most common forms of birth control prescribed at this time. We are all familiar with what it looks like; four sets of 7 seven pills, totaling 28 daily doses. But have you ever noticed that in order to make it to your annual doctor's appointment - and a year has to go by between visits because insurance only allows one check up in a calendar year - you always have to call over a month before to her office and ask for the doctor to call your pharmacy to up your prescription at least one more time so that you don't have to skip a month (or maybe even two)?

here's why:

The stupid thing can only be prescribed for 12 months. Which any average American would think, no big deal. It's a monthly prescription obviously you would only need 12. Well, do the math 4 weeks x 12 prescriptions is 48 weeks. Last time I checked there were 52 weeks in a year, so the prescription really should be written for 13 fills. But here is the kicker, each time the drug is refilled an individual get's "1 month", by law a prescription is only good for one year and so at most it can only have 12 months listed on the slip.

Oh the stupidity of those in charge. Imagine how much time could be saved if women across the nation didn't have to call their doctors who have to call the individual pharmacies to extend prescriptions that help keep sex safe every year.
