Sexy Costumes

Since we are on the topic of sexy Halloween costumes, I wanted to throw my arms up one last time in response to the styling of costumes that are made for women. Even when the costume refrains from using "sexy" in its title, the female version is far more form fitting than its male counterpoint.

I have not seen the movie Avatar, so I don't know the habits of the blue people. Based on the costumes, it would appear that the males get to wear clothes, and the women don't.

Heavens to Betsy. Would it kill the manufacture to give the female population a break. Spandex is not particularly forgiving. These costumes are not made for the masses. The dude version gets not just a pair of pants and a shirt, but a jacket on top of that. Think of the layers he is getting. She will be shivering like crazy with her barely there blue skin. He doesn't even consider grabbing a coat, it comes in the kit.

Okokok. I am done. Just needed to throw that out there.

Happy Halloween

This year I decided to do Lady Gaga. It might have been done to death, but whatever, how often do you get the opportunity to go out in public without pants. While I realize that the lack of pants should put in the trampy category of costumes, but I would like believe that I still haven't gone the way of "sexy _____". After careful consideration, I decided to go with Poker Face Lady Gaga:

Per usual, I did keep with my personal life view of "go big or go home" and committed to leotard and hood only. Let me tell you, walking down the street to the house party I went to was a bit chilly to say the least. The costume was well received, and I even won "best celebrity look-a-like". Here are two pictures I took on my computer before I headed out, I figured I would spare the internet a picture that would include my bum.

Sometimes You Just Got to Wear a Tiara

I woke up tired, and slightly cranky. While I did have a great first part of the evening with some gal pals watching New Moon and eating cupcakes, the end of the night consisted of me sitting on my couch in disbelief as the Celtics got pounded. I needed Wednesday to be, in a word, awesome.

Work did not help, except for my lunch hour nap. I have taken to napping during my lunch as I find it to be the best use of that time. This time, not only did it give me the extra zzzz's I needed but also boosted up my energy so that I could go to my kickball game at 8:15 pm.

Normally, I wear my pink tutu to the games. Yes, I know I now play on the purple team, but this bit of happy tulle is just too hard to give up. The tutu brings me, and pretty much everyone that sees me, joy. I had this nagging feeling that maybe the tutu wouldn't cut it this time, so I went to look through my costume closet. As soon as I opened the door, I saw it.

My tiara.

I bought it for last year's Halloween costume (Holly Golightly) and I don't know if I have touched it since. The tiara was quickly nestled into my updo and off I went, skipping down the hill.

Even though it is smaller and less colorful than my tutu, it received just as much attention and caused just as many smiles. I have interacted with a number of people on my short walk to kickball these last few weeks because of my choice in clothing, and this week was no different. Everyone seems to enjoy seeing a bit of misplaced flair.

I think I will have to pull out the tiara more often. My mother honors Tiara Tuesdays and wears one in her classroom each week. If I could get away with it, I think I would do the same. Sadly, I don't think my office would approve. At least I have outlets like kickball that allow for some flair in my life!

Oooops. Sorry.

I saw this woman the first time one the way to work on the Friday before Halloween. She had an orange face and huge black hair with some gray streaks. Thought to myself, awesome Halloween costume. She had to be like a witch or something.

Yeah, saw her again this morning. Not a costume. Self tanner and bronzer issues. This reminds me of a girl I once knew that was often on the orange side. Very awkward. Why do women do this? What color was your skin originally that you thought orange was a better alternative?

I understand that getting a real tan or tan from a box are not the healthiest things for a person, but looking like an orange is down right awful. I'd rather just be pale...

Never met a theme party I didn't love

The subject of this post is my little blurb on my facebook page. I couldn't think of a more true statement that would also envelope my personality. Costumes and I get along really well. My dress up days are not limited to Halloween by any means. Kickball season results in me in costume once a week. These costumes tend to revolve around the color pink and spandex but each weeks contains a new collection of flair.

Recently there have been two events that involved costumes. The first, was our mid-season kickball party which was themed "good girls, bad boys". A group of girls decided we would all dress as cops, my friend and I created matching uniforms. The night was full of shoot outs and arresting the rif raf. People love to be handcuffed!

No individual was safe, I was able to take down Lucy McGillicuddy-Ricardo myself for handing out vitameatavegamin. We both were needed to take down the man in red. He was pretty naughty that night and we were not letting him off easy. Both going downtown and returning to our neighborhoods people on the T made comments that "the police are here!". I don't know what police woman wears 2-4 inch heels or fishnets, but apparently they do. We did get a whole lot of free Absolute Boston samples because of outfits at Tavern in the Square in Porter.

The other major dress up day recently, was of course, Halloween. Like I mentioned earlier, I was looking to go classy. So I went with Holly Golightly (aka Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast in Tiffany's). I think I nailed it. There were people on the T, street and bar who stopped me to identify my costume and praise it. Nothing makes me more excited when I am recognized like that. :)

The dress was from my senior prom. It actually fits better than it did then. So go me! I did have to purchase the accessories; cigarette holder, pearls, tiara and gloves. Like I said, I was rather thrilled with the outfit. I will say, it is hard to create her hair style as she had extensions and I, didn't. But again, I did the best I could and think I executed the best I could.

Oh and yes, I have been thinking about my costume for next year already. Nothing is calling out to me as of yet, but I am already considering options.

"Good Girls" are still slutty

In two weeks we have the mid-season party for my kickball league. The board opted to go with a theme for this event, and that theme is "Good Girls, Bad Boys". When we first discussed this at the bar after the games last week one of the females that was around me said, "so Catholic school girl uniforms then?".

Honestly.

I love wearing costumes. I find putting on outfits that regular society would look at me strangely for as something really really enjoyable. While, I completely understand that some (okay most) of the outfits are tight and short, I like to think that I do keep relatively covered up (in spandex). Halloween costumes that are made for women are all plunging necklines, bared midriffs, coupled with teeny bottoms. I don't purchase ready made "slutty ____" costumes purely on principle.

The concept of "Good Girl" for this party really should simply say, "Slutty versions of good girls". My friends and I are attempting to dress like cops. However, I am relatively certain that when I am walking to and from the bar a) I will not be mistaken for a cop on duty and b) will not blend in easily with other patrons when we leave the kickball festivities and attempt to join up with friends at other establishments.

Just throwing it out there, my actual Halloween costume will so not be slutty this year. I have a few more pieces to acquire for it, but it seems to be working out just fine and I am very pleased with the idea.

KICKBALL with heart

If ever a game needed a play by play it was tonight...here is mine:

The place was field one. The day was Monday. The time was 8:31 pm. The pink team had a choice; call the forfeit because the maroons were short a girl and past the 15 minute mark or give them 3 minutes for their two girls to run from the T. Pinks decided that they were in it to win it, and allowed for the game to go on even though we only had 10 people ourselves. We knew it was going to be hard, especially since we were the lower seed and so onto the field we went.

The maroons had 13 people (with 5 girls) and never allowed for more than four females on the field at any given time. In fact, they were told every inning to get the fourth out there. With the game delay the pink team forgot to start the game with a cheer and allowed 3 runs in the first inning. To get back the focus, the pink team regrouped and went with the rolling "goooooo pink". And well, that was the game.

The next inning one of our players lost his pants, and the pink still couldn't get a run, but neither did the other team. The third inning, still down by three, the pink started with a walk by yours truley (strutting all the way in spandex shorts thank you very much). This may or may not have annoyed a certain maroon captain. Our tall outfielder got up to the plate and kicked a solid single; so man on first and girl on second. Our pitcher went up to the plate, kicked a few fowl balls and then KICKED THE LIVING SHIT out of the ball. Our outfielder had to basically start walking behind me so that I could score before him, with the pitcher not too far behind us and then it was 3-3 BITCHES!!!!

Nothing happened in the fourth. (except where I may have pissed off enough of the maroon team calling them assholes, shushing their captain when she tried to dispute a call, and generally getting in their way as much as possible while playing catcher - may have blown in some guy's neck because he chose to stand as close to me as possible...). The pressure was on to wrap this game up within five innings. The refs (blue team) were being super fair but told us to get our A-Game on as turns out the maroon team totally cheated against them in the cambridge league and they did not want to see them get to the next level. The ref's had their team slowly show up along with some cheerleaders and all of them were on side. With that kind of fan support, we were able to bring the score to 6-3!!!! The maroon being the higher seed had last at bats and well, they never got past second. CUZ WE WON!!!!!!

Apparently most people don't like this team. We have had some haters on us because of our flair and general ridiculousness. But these people were just freaking intense. They ASSIGNED positions. I know. Insane. Think good things for us on Wednesday!!! We have a title to defend!!!!

Yes, this outfit was on purpose

Yesterday, a friend and I attempted to go to the anime comic convention Boston. We got there a little after 1 pm and were informed that it was just too late to get in! This news kinda sucked. What sucked a bit more was that I was totally dressed up to be a female school fighting anime character. Let me try and paint a picture for you.

Knee high black boots over neon blue tights where were under black fishnets. A black and white plaid school girl skirt that had suspenders hanging down made of some plastic-ish material and a lot of hard wear that was also found in the built-in belt that went around the waist. On top I was sporting a black t-shirt that had checkered suspenders drawn on them. The look was completed with dog tags, huge plastic earings, high pigtails, black head band and intense blue eye makeup and nails. This might sound like a big mess, and well maybe it was, but I feel that the look really came together nicely. I would have fit right in. To bad I never made it through the front doors.

Instead we wandered around the city getting burgers/beer, seeing Terminator, and met up with some friends for a bbq. As soon as I got to the bbq I stripped off some of the accessories in the bathroom. I was told when I came out that usually when girls remove items she become a bit more racy - not in this case. Removing the "jewlery" - if you can call it that - the fishnets and putting my hair up in a ponytail really helped bring the outfit down a few notches.

The bbq was winding down when we arrived, and everyone then went on upstairs to watch the Cavs play the Magic. It was super lovely attempting to sit ladylike in a skirt that just didn't really cover much of anything. The day was nothing like I thought it would be, but it was super fun. And let's be honest, I really had no problem walking around in the costume, sitting was really my bigger challenge.

We have vowed to go back next year and get in. Lesson learned, you have to show up EARLY to get into comic book conventions, they don't let just anyone in, no matter how awesome they look!

What ever happened to JANE?

I wanted blue lipstick for this weekend. Anyone who follows me on twitter or has me on gchat is probably sick of me posting about this desire. But, well, I feel the need to express my frustrations.

Last night I agreed to go to a comic convention this weekend. Of course, I will be dressing up - Anime style - and immediately began to formulate my plan. I developed my concept while driving home around 1 am and the piéce de'la résistance was blue lipstick. I texted someone who I thought would be able to give me the inside scoop on where to locate such a product. He replied back with CVS which I didn't think would stock it, but figured maybe I was wrong. Well today I went on a hunt to get some items for the outfit. I ended up going to SEVEN different stores (including 3 CVSs) and no luck. Not only was there not blue lipstick, but it would seem that no one sells junk cosmetics anymore. There are only "real" lines.

What ever happened JANE and wet and wild? I feel that back in the day, when I was in middle school, I could go into any CVS type store and find make up in the most ridiculous colors. I can only assume that kids these days have more of a need to look like adults. We used to use crazy colored make up and wear the strangest outfits and it was fine. I see kids walking to school in the morning, and well, they look like me. They are in middle school, they should be awkward! Oooo, there's a thought, maybe they are awkward which means that I am too...no that can't be right.

Anyway, I digress, the bigger issue is that every store manager that saw me lost and wandering, attempted to help me out. Once I explained what I was searching for, they all told me the same thing. Blue lipstick is stocked at Halloween, other than that, there just simply isn't a demand for it. Well that is a bother. I'm sure my plan B will work out fine, but I am a little bummed.
