Floating Rainbows

One of the perks for working for a Catholic based institution is that you get Good Friday off. I used a good portion of the day to work on various school projects which of course means that I have crime tv marathons playing in the background. During one of the commercial breaks I saw the following ad for Crayola's new colored bubbles.

Ummm...how fun is this? I don't like that the bubbles leave stains on whatever they pop on, but at least the company is letting me know this. I went to the Crayola website and they recommend customers wear their play clothes when using the product, and explicitly say that these are a good idea for weddings. Glad they covered their bums with that, otherwise in a few months, there would be a good number of angry brides who disregarded the general message that these bubbles are made of washable dyes.

Angry Birds are taking over

Angry Birds are thisclose to being yesterday's news. I mean it took the world by storm, but pretty much everyone I know has beaten the game by now (I did so in December). Needless to say, I still get excited when I see those crazy birds online or in stores.

A few weeks ago, there was the video of the peace summit - I could have sworn I posted it, but apparently that came out in my lazy poster period.

On Saturday, I stopped in Urban Outters on the way to the bowling alley to get out of the way of some bone chilling wind. There I saw plush versions of the birds and pigs. Love it. They are on my short list of silly things needing to be purchased for my office. I feel that my coworkers and I would love to zing this back and forth, as we are about to enter a super tense part of the year.

But today, I saw an article about a man who recreated the game into the form of a cake for his son's birthday! As much fun as it would be to play a real life Angry Birds, I don't think I would really want to eat cake that was flinging around the dining room. But if anyone wants to make me an Angry Birds cake to help me get through the Spring Semester, by all means get cooking. :)

Some Pretty to Combat the Dreary

Yes, I chose to live in the Northeast.
Yes, I chose to live in the greater Boston area, in the most densely populated city.
Yes, I have a car but no off-street parking which means I depend on street-parking.

But, even with this, I am so overwhelmed by snow and cannot handle any more until some of these snow banks melt down.

The snow has already started up again, and I am just going to waive my white flag. My car is going to stay in the garage at work, and I will depend on the bus to get to work. To help me cope with the exhausting morning commute that will be my future (~80 minutes from start to finish) let's look at some color, quirk, and happiness by Mary Katrantzou

I would so wear this skirt. Alright, I would wear this outfit

This necklace is to die for

Loving the colors in this one

Ok, I can do without the arm things

Happy as a frog

This has to be one of my favorite videos/pictures I have found on the internet. For the last few months I have kept it as a bookmark and refer to it during stressful times. This frog's happiness is so contagious!!

Short Fuse

Working in customer services has its ups and downs. One of the ups is if no one has a question at any particular moment, you get to blog at work. The big down is, if everyone has a question, you end up talking for 7 hours straight, forget to use the bathroom, and begin to hate all of mankind for being so freaking stupid.

I wrote that paragraph on Friday and could not return to this post until today (Tuesday). Oye! Yeah, I know, I shouldn't complain that I have to work non-stop with no breaks, but sometimes you just want a little breathing room. Fortunately today isn't too bad, so I anticipate that this post should be up in the early afternoon. I would try to finish it during lunch, but we have our hour lunches cut down today - barely enough time to eat and grab a breath of fresh air!

Back to the point of this post:

I saw a gchat status message of a friend of mine which was simply a link to Sneaky Spiral of Hate. (You may have seen it earlier this year if you frequent Hyperbole and a Half.) This is the first time I have been to the site, for a moment I was confused and thought I was within the oatmeal website, but nope, just similar drawing styles.

The Spiral of Hate is pretty spot on and the illustrations made me laugh out loud, for reals (which is why I didn't say lol). It made me think about my typical days, all my hate and how true this spiral is.

As I reflected about how frustration builds, I began looking through the site. My spiral of hate started going full force as I noticed she can live off her blog and I cannot -grrrrr. I mean I understand that my blog really has no focus other than me, and I have no idea what kind of merchandise I could then create...but let's go back to explaining the other aspects of my spiral.

The start of the spiral was waking up hot (as my a/c is still on the floor of my bedroom rather than in my window), stupid ass drivers on the commute in (oh I forgot that you should be in the left hand lane to make a right turn), a huge number of asinine questions ("I wanted to be sure I should follow the directions in the email you sent me"), and a phone altercation with a local government office. Yes, I might have yelled at some innocent bystander in that office, but I feel absolutely no remorse about it. If she had been nice to me, I would have felt bad about projecting my frustration with the office onto her, but she just proved that they could care less about the service they provide the community. I need to stop this post now, because just thinking about this is revving up the hate and I need to be as pleasant as possible as we have a lot of visitors today.

Reliving the Silliness of my Childhood

Today I saw that there will be a new Shel Silverstein book out in 2011. (Apparently this is the second posthumous publication, a collection entitled Runny Babbit came out in 2005.)

This extremely talented poet was the brains behind some of my favorite books growing up; A Light in the Attic, Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Missing Piece, etc. I can remember reading these books cover to cover, over and over again. Giggling each and every time. I decided to memorize a number of the poems and realize that to this day, I can still recite pieces of them.

I have to be perfectly honest in that I might purchase these books as gifts for children of friends just so I can quickly read the books cover to cover before wrapping them up. Additionally, A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends have been re-released as special editions, each containing an additional 12 poems. Again, I would love to get my hands on a copy so that I can see the new silliness.
I am pretty sure this picture is from a poem about children who want to revolt, but can't continue with their crusade as they cannot cross the street by themselves.

Everyone Loves a Good Mustache

I saw a link for the dog-stache on twitter this morning and did a little internet research to find out more about this amazing product.

Your pet can now double as Snidely Whiplash. I have been wanting a dog so badly lately and reminding my parents how awesome it would be if they rescued another one. Sadly, they are not biting, but if they were to give in, this would be the first toy I would purchase for our new four legged friend. A close second would be the matching tongue.

Both items can be purchased on Amazon.

What is the point of hipsters if not to poke fun of them?

Websites and blogs devoted to poking fun at the hipster culture and style have been running rampant lately. We have all seen Look At This Fucking Hipster that started back in March 2009. It provided me a little amusement, but I soon stopped checking the new pictures.

Then came Unhappy Hipster. This blog focuses in on images that are found in Dwell Magazine. While the designs are minimalistic they provide ample material to create witty and comic taglines.

The debate — whether the ubiquity of suburban neo-modern developments was really an upgrade from new-money McMansions — ended in a standoff, mired by the generation gap.

That has to be one of my favorite entries.

But I have to say, we have found the ultimate hipster blog. Hipster puppies. We have learned that hipsters may be too cool for most things, but they are not above dressing their dogs in their own weird ass clothing. Personally, I feel this blog has some major staying power! Below is one of the newer posts. It reminds me about why, as a driver and pedestrian, I hate bicyclists.

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiii I mean Weeeeeeeeeeeeee

For the first time in my life I own a gaming system. My mum got me and my sister each a Wii. We were both very excited. The first thing I did when I got home from the holidays was purchase the New Super Mario Brothers game. Currently it is the only game that I have besides the one that the system comes with. I also, I only have one remote, which is why I haven't bothered to invite anyone over to play.

I was able to try out the multi player style of play at my parents house with my sister. She is TERRIBLE. I may be bad at this game, but I cannot even tell you how many times she died. The one thing that made us laugh more than anything else is that if you jump on your teammate you start bouncing on their head over and over and over again. We couldn't stop giggling.

Now, I would like to be able to brag and say when I got home to my apartment I was amazing at the game by myself. That is not the case. One of the features that I am grateful for, and slightly embarrassed that I have had to use, is the Luigi help box. If you die something like 5 times on the same level, a Luigi help box appears at the beginning of the course. Once you jump up to open the big green box with an "!" in the center Luigi comes racing out and shows you how to complete the level. You can stop it at any point in time, personally, I let him run through the whole thing. Additionally, it gives you the option to then do the level yourself. Again, I figured if I just died 5 times, I don't need another try. I am well aware of what I was supposed to do, I just couldn't get the timing down.

Currently I am in the second world. I have yet to collect all three big coins in any given world, but I am trucking along nicely. Hopefully, I can eventually go back and try to get them later on.

Seriously, the Wii is so much fun. I can't wait to get some more games and simply get more playing time now that I don't have class. :) Right now I am having a hard time climbing on the fences in the mid-castle in world 2. I hope to get the hang of it soon!

This is a post about Bacon

Is there really any food more deserving of it's own post than bacon? I don't think so. And even vegetarians will admit that bacon is an intriguing meat.

I found this on Passive Aggressive Notes . The post has provided my friends and I hours of laughter. Between "soyfucker" and "ps bacon is life" the set of notes is pricessless :)

A friend of mine tweeted about this amazing new product, bacon flavored envelopes. Imagine how much more enjoyable having to lick all 40 of my Christmas Card envelopes would have been if I got a hint of bacon and salt with each seal? I would be happier with the task, not that I don't thoroughly adore sending them, I just hate that gluey taste.

The site mentions Bacon Salt. Trust me, it is a real thing. A good friend received a some as a gift. It was completely used up in a matter of months. He reported back to us that it really did provide some serious bacon flavor. I never got to taste it, but it has been on my list of things to purchase, as I feel like it might be a nice add-on for things like salads, or veggies in general.

The final site worth mentioning would be http://baconbaconbaconbaconbacon.com/ here you can see why bacon is better than love. They make a very compelling case...don't you think?

Couldn't help myself with this post, don't worry I'll get back to shoes and skirts

Went to get $6 of stuff came out with about $45

I can purchase new $80 shoes if they have a high enough heel or a $40+ dollar hot pink dress if it has a tutu skirt without even thinking twice. But can I purchase a new hair brush for $3 after breaking mine? No, not on your life. For some reason spending those three dollars has been the hardest thing for me to do for over the last 3 years. Instead, I have opted to get annoyed and frustrated every day while brushing my hair with a broke brush.

After the rope on my shower puff snapped, I realized if I am going to drop a $3 on a new puff, I might as well get that brush. So with that said, today I took a venture into CVS, and like any good American, I came out with more stuff than I intended to. While I roamed the aisles, there were a few things that made those 20 minutes most enjoyable and enlightening.

I ended up purchasing a pink shower puff. I reached into the first bin I saw and ended up with it, the chose was not something I had thought much of at all. As I continued down the shower stuff aisle I noticed that the men's and women's supplies were segregated more intensely that I ever thought. Not only are the shaving products separated, but the shower gels/body washes were kept on either side of the shaving products so that the soaps could not get confused. In the area of the male shower supplies BLACK shower puffs were on display. Over by the women, pastels ruled. It never occurred to me that if a guy wanted a shower puff, he would need to own a black one, but apparently someone seems to think this color choice is needed.

After over coming you shock of the black puff I began to think about how I wanted to drink a Cape Codder when I got home but had already left the grocery store and was pretty sure I was out of cranberry juice. Well, CVS sometimes has drinks and food so I continued on. There was no cranberry juice in the fridges, I thought I had been thwarted and then I saw the "water & juice" sign. AWESOME. Right? Not so awesome. Apparently, in CVS flavored seltzer water is considered juice. There was nothing on that set of shelves that was either plain bottled water or flavored seltzer. I was slightly taken aback, why bother have the juice part? Oh well...

I had acquired a number items at that point but had a nagging feeling I was missing something. Then I remembered I was low on q-tips! Duh. I stood there for a moment trying to figure out where I would locate them. Technically they are not supposed to be used in your ear and instead for make up removal and cleaning small things. Off to the beauty aisles I went. After coming up with nothing I asked the woman stocking the shelves. The BABY SUPPLY AISLE was were I was directed. Honestly? Who decides where to put this stuff. I figured you might need to know this when you go through your set of 300.

The final thing is not so much entertaining but, I don't know, maybe something that just eases my mind. My friends and I had been talking about how women get the short end of the stick when it comes to health issues. By health issues I am not talking about actual physical diseases, conditions, or biological stuff, but things like having to pay more in health insurance. The other things mentioned were how being a woman with lots of headaches is considered normal, but if a man had the same complaint to their doctor action would be taken, or that you can't use flexible spending accounts to buy tampons and pads (this is something that just baffles me). After talking about how you can't do this, we suddenly got really concerned that we might be paying taxes on these items. Sales tax is not placed on things that are "necessary" like milk. Pretty sure any female would add tampons to that list. Well with this on my mind, I went ahead and purchased some, I needed them anyway. NO TAX. Thank God. If I had seen a line item for tax I would have ranted - even more than when I discussed my displeasure with the way Birth Control is prescribed. All you women, please let it be known, we are not being taxed for menstruating.

I Overheard This!!

I was on a submitting spree a few months ago and submitted quotes and what not to textsfromlastnight, overheardintheoffice and passiveagressivenotes. Today my google reader listed one of my submissions!

...And Don't Give Me the Old "Global Warming" Argument Again!

Pretty excited that something I thought was funny (and didn't personally blog about) actually made it onto the web.

5 and 46 are by far my favorite

This was forwarded to me by a friend. It is one of the best lists I have seen, and more original than most that I have read.

1. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

2. More often than not, when someone is telling me a story all I can think about is that I can't wait for them to finish so that I can tell my own story that's not only better, but also more directly involves me.

3. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

4. I don't understand the purpose of the line, "I don't need to drink to have fun." Great, no one does. But why start a fire with flint and sticks when they've invented the lighter?

5. Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you're going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you're crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk.

6. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

7. The letters T and G are very close to each other on a keyboard. This recently became all too apparent to me and consequently I will never be ending a work email with the phrase "Regards" again.

8. Do you remember when you were a kid playing Nintendo and it wouldn't work? You take the cartridge out, blow in it and that would magically fix the problem. Every kid in America did that, but how did we all know how to fix the problem? There was no internet or message boards or FAQ's. We just figured it out. Today's kids are soft.

9. There is a great need for sarcasm font.

10. Sometimes, I'll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the f*ck was going on when I first saw it.

11. I think everyone has a movie that they love so much, it actually becomes stressful to watch it with other people. I'll end up wasting 90 minutes shiftily glancing around to confirm that everyone's laughing at the right parts, then making sure I laugh just a little bit harder (and a millisecond earlier) to prove that I'm still the only one who really, really gets it.

12. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

13. I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.

14. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

15. The only time I look forward to a red light is when I'm trying to finish a text.

16. A recent study has shown that playing beer pong contributes to the spread of mono and the flu. Yeah, if you suck at it.

17. Was learning cursive really necessary?

18. Lol has gone from meaning, "laugh out loud" to "I have nothing else to say".

19. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

20. Answering the same letter three times or more in a row on a Scantron test is absolutely petrifying.

21. Whenever someone says "I'm not book smart, but I'm street smart", all I hear is "I'm not real smart, but I'm imaginary smart".

22. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear what they said?

23. Every time I have to spell a word over the phone using 'as in' examples, I will undoubtedly draw a blank and sound like a complete idiot. Today I had to spell my boss's last name to an attorney and said "Yes that's G as in...(10 second lapse)...ummm...Goonies"

24. What would happen if I hired two private investigators to follow each other?

25. While driving yesterday I saw a banana peel in the road and instinctively swerved to avoid it...thanks Mario Kart.

26. MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

27. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.

28. I find it hard to believe there are actually people who get in the shower first and THEN turn on the water.

29. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.

30. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.

31. Bad decisions make good stories

32. Whenever I'm Facebook stalking someone and I find out that their profile is public I feel like a kid on Christmas morning who just got the Red Ryder BB gun that I always wanted. 546 pictures? Don't mind if I do!

33. Is it just me or do high school girls get sluttier & sluttier every year?

34. If Carmen San Diego and Waldo ever got together, their offspring would probably just be completely invisible.

35. Why is it that during an ice-breaker, when the whole room has to go around and say their name and where they are from, I get so incredibly nervous? Like I know my name, I know where I'm from, this shouldn't be a problem....

36. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you've made up your mind that you just aren't doing anything productive for the rest of the day.

37. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after DVDs? I don't want to have to restart my collection.

38. There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to fall after leaning your chair back a little too far.

39. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.

40. I hate being the one with the remote in a room full of people watching TV. There's so much pressure. 'I love this show, but will they judge me if I keep it on? I bet everyone is wishing we weren't watching this. It's only a matter of time before they all get up and leave the room. Will we still be friends after this?'

41. I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Damnit!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voicemail. What'd you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away?

42. I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.

43. When I meet a new girl, I'm terrified of mentioning something she hasn't already told me but that I have learned from some light internet stalking.

44. I like all of the music in my iTunes, except when it's on shuffle, then I like about one in every fifteen songs in my iTunes.

45. Why is a school zone 20 mph? That seems like the optimal cruising speed for pedophiles...

46. As a driver I hate pedestrians, and as a pedestrian I hate drivers, but no matter what the mode of transportation, I always hate cyclists.

47. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.

48. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.

49. I think that if, years down the road when I'm trying to have a kid, I find out that I'm sterile, most of my disappointment will stem from the fact that I was not aware of my condition in college.

50. Even if I knew your social security number, I wouldn't know what do to with it.

51. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet my ass everyone can find and push the Snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time every time...

52. It really pisses me off when I want to read a story on CNN.com and the link takes me to a video instead of text.

53. I wonder if cops ever get pissed off at the fact that everyone they drive behind obeys the speed limit.

54. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lites than with Kay.

55. The other night I ordered takeout, and when I looked in the bag, saw they had included four sets of plastic silverware. In other words, someone at the restaurant packed my order, took a second to think about it, and then estimate d that there must be at least four people eating to require such a large amount of food. Too bad I was eating by myself. There's nothing like being made to feel like a fat bastard before dinner.

For the Person Who Doesn't Like to Touch Toilet Paper

Thank God someone invented this product. I mean, toilet paper is so archaic.

I don't know about you, but I could really use those extra 18 inches of reach. At first I thought this product was just too complicated to use, but then I was assured it was like using a shower brush. PHEW.

An Era Ends

Due to new facebook, one of my 2+ years facebook poke wars has sadly come to an end. Since February 2007 I have been in a poke war with my best friend from home and an ex-roommate's younger brother. When facebook made their most recent layout changes, the notification of a poke was thrown way down at the bottom. I had almost missed the first return poke from the younger brother. My best friend seems to have lost the momentum, as it has been a few weeks now since I last saw a response.

Shakey fist to you facebook. Ruining a part of my routine like this!!! At least one of my foes was able to find that I had poked him back before the switch was made...
